Russell, Jr., Harrison Have Back-to-Back TV Appearances This Week!

We mentioned that undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. will be facing Miguel Tamayo of Mexico on Thursday, January 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.  It has now been reported that the eight-round contest will open the telecast of that card on Fox Sports 1 that will begin at 9 PM ET.

Russell's TV appearance will be the first of two back-to-back appearances of Beltway Boxers on National TV (in consecutive weeks).  Friday night at the Codey Arena in West Orange, NJ, Dusty Hernandez Harrison of DC will open the ESPN2 telecast with an eight-rounder against Tim Witherspoon, Jr.  That broadcast will also begin at 9 PM ET.

To recap, here is the list of Beltway Boxers that either have been or will be on National TV in January:

Lamont Peterson
Bayan Jargal
Daniel Attah
Antoine Douglas
Thomas Williams, Jr.
Gary Russell, Jr.
Dusty Hernandez Harrison

Dominic Wade's scheduled appearance on Showtime Extreme was cut due to time restrictions ( unofficial translation: Showtime didn't think Attah would go the distance with Robert Easter, Jr.)

It should not be that difficult of a fight for Dusty, an opponent with a decent winning record but should not be much trouble for Harrison. Smart managing on his team. Him and his team are smart, hope they do well friday and in the future, I root for all locals.

Gary is also going to win easily, and maybe by early stoppage. I would even bet on a stoppage by Russell.

Lil G will knock this joker out.
Miguel Tamayo has lost 6 out of his last 8 fights and knocked out in 5 of them. Are you sure that the commission has approved this bout? Will this fight air in TV? If so, what time?

Gary if you didn't know, Cecil McCalla is fighting Eric Mitchell (23-10-1) in a 6 rounder on the undercard of FNF this week which as you know Dusty is opening the telecast. McCalla's fight won't be televised.

Thank you! I had heard he was going to be on the card but couldn't get a confirmation! Thanks for the info.

Gary Russell Jr. fighting another stiff. Time for him to step up his competition.

Why. Dusty is doing the same thing.Top Dog Williams has been stepping up in competition. Let them fighters take their time. Make the money.

Do you expect Russell to take a tough fight with a MANDATORY world title fight on the horizon? This is a stay busy bout. Still a minor risk because of the unknown, but it is a stay busy contest.

The undercard features another disappointingly one sided match-up for junior lightweight prospect Gary Russell, Jr. (23-0, 13 KO). Just about everybody has given up hope that Russell will ever fight anyone with a pulse.

Again, I ask, why do you want him to take a tough fight and risk losing a MANDATORY WORLD TITLE shot? That would be very stupid!

I agree this time about Gary...but he had the chance to fight Mares..turned it down, Jhonny Gonzlez wanted the Russel fight last year, Gary turned it down. Then he had Ponce De Leon..Gary turned it down. It is getting hard to defend this guy.

What is he waiting to step up.he has talent but it seems he dont beleive in himself. He just calls out boxers who are off there prime. I think a win over Deleon would put him on the right spot for bigger things. And if he losses to Deleon at least it puts him on the real map of the boxing world.

He has bad hands. Doesn't like to fight much cause they brake easily.

Gary will not lose to De Leon, I can assure that. I sparred Gary and also have seen him in real bouts not just sparring, I believe he can even look better than what Broner looked in the ring with De Leon. Gary is just a better fighter than both of the boxers I previously mentioned

Do you not realize he is going to be fighting for a title next? Why fight a dangerous opponent when ultimately you have a title shot pending? And I believe Gonzalez wouldn't sign the contract to fight Gary.

Anonymous said...

yes he has a title fight pending blah blah. But do you really think he will sign a title fight against Lomachenko? BC Lomachenko is going to destroy Salido and have that belt.

His competition the past 5 fights has been so bad (still better than that feared TBA i concede), but it says something about the sanctioning bodies that he is in line for a title shot given that level of comeptition. How about fighting a top-20 gatekeeper? Also, if you are gunning for a title, it makes sense to challenge yourself with tough fights. It is completely fair that GR Jr. gets criticism from the media about the level of his competition. Who knows if Lomanchenko is any good, but he's stepping up to fight a Top 5 guy in his 2nd fight!!!
